After a nearly decade-long hiatus from New York Fashion Week, Indian designers Falguni and Shane Peacock made a triumphant return this season, accompanied by image architect Law Roach. This collaboration marked a comeback for Roach as well, as he had been selective about new creative endeavors since his previous collaboration with Hervé Lèger in June.
The opportunity to work with the Peacocks was irresistible for Roach. Prior to meeting them at the opening of Mumbai’s Ambani Cultural Center, he had already borrowed some of their pieces to style with. It felt like destiny for him to bring his own unique flavor to their designs.
The Peacock brand is renowned for its opulence and intricate beading, embodying the essence of India. Roach aimed to infuse a clash of cultures into their collection, envisioning a fusion between Mumbai and New York. Backstage, he explained, “What I brought to it is this clash of cultures. What does it look like if Mumbai meets New York dead in the middle?”
On the runway, this clash of cultures translated into cool couture with a streetwise sensibility. The collection featured gray cashmere sweatshirts and joggers, reimagining the idea of incorporating crystals onto a peaked lapel blazer or sequin basketball shorts for everyday wear. Athleisure references, such as cutout bra tops, varsity stripes, and baseball caps, elevated the cool factor of the otherwise standard evening attire. Shredded denim accents added an edgy touch to the ensembles.
One notable aspect was the absence of traditional Indian costume homages, with the exception of the opening look—a white shirt with a long tail draped over the shoulder like a sari. Despite this, the Peacocks expressed their excitement at showcasing the craftsmanship of artisans from their native country on an international platform. Falguni remarked, “It’s a very proud moment for us to be back showing on an international platform.”
The collaboration between Falguni and Shane Peacock and Law Roach brought together the best of both worlds, combining the brand’s opulence and beading with Roach’s clash of cultures. The result was a collection that seamlessly blended traditional Indian influences with a contemporary streetwear aesthetic, creating a unique and captivating fashion experience.
