Vivienne Westwood PFW

Vivienne Westwood’s AW20 Paris Fashion Week show exuded gothic opulence. Andreas Kronthaler’s ninth collection for his rebellious muse and partner, Vivienne Westwood, was held under the ornate ceilings of Hôtel de Ville, the perfect setting for the darkly glamorous show. There was no shortage of gaunt cheekbones and corseted waists, but Kronthaler added a pinch of satire; the models were laden with garlic and dried chilly garlands, warding off bad Parisian spirits and descending into the gothic realm.

The show was an infatuating reminder of why corsets are so timeless (and why more men should wear them), but it wouldn’t be a Westwood show without a modern twist. The outfits were made entirely of recycled nylon and leather materials from collections gone by; and there were glaring influences from the 90s, a footwear collaboration with Buffalo and looks reminiscent of the ‘heroin chic’ movement.

Long-time Westwood-muse Bella Hadid stole the show in her finale bridal look. Sheer lace was paired with a pale pink corset, Swarovski encrusted heels and a rustic dagger, which she unsheathed mid-walk, adding a medieval eroticism to the bridalwear. Hadid was met by Kronthaler and Westwood at the end of the catwalk, taking a bow and a huge bunch of flowers, subtly providing the audience with an extended moment of indulgence in the look.
