American singer and songwriter KIRBY today shares a video for her acclaimed recent single ‘Superpower’.  Featuring Grammy-nominated upcoming rapper D Smoke,  ‘Superpower’ is a seamless blend of retro-futurist soul and showcases KIRBY’s undeniable star wattage,  her magnetic vocals, and lyrics full of warmth and honesty feel like the perfect nourishment for these troubled times.

The video,  shot by David Karp & Courtney Loo in Thousand Oaks and San Pedro, is a beautifully cinematic companion piece,  deeply personal but universal in its message.  In KIRBY’s own words;  “I lost a family member to gun violence in 2019. When I say Black Lives Matter I’m not saying it because it’s a trend, I’m saying it because I know what it feels like to bury a young black man too soon. This video is dedicated to him, and to anyone who has suffered a loss. I know it hurts, but don’t forget we got Superpowers!”

The Memphis-born, Mississippi raised rising star first established herself as the incredibly talented writer behind “FourFiveSeconds” by Rihanna, Kanye West and Paul McCartney, “Tell Me You Love Me” by Demi Lovato, “Die With You” by Beyoncé, “Only One” by Kanye West and Paul McCartney, “Break Your Heart Right Back” by Ariana Grande and more.  In January 2020 KIRBY pivoted the spotlight onto her own music with the release of a 7-track EP produced by Homer Steinweiss and The Menahan Street Band of Amy Winehouse’s famous album “Back to Black”. With this project, KIRBY put her own spin on soul, using live instrumentation and melodic prowess to blend contemporary and nostalgia.

The “Sis” EP has been met with widespread praise, earning her a spot on NPR’s Tiny Desk, three separate usages in this season of HBO’s series ‘Insecure’ and over 18 million streams across streaming platforms in only a few months. Most recently KIRBY performed ‘Superpower’ in session for COLORS which is an absolute must-watch,  check it out here.

In June 2020, Kirby posted a viral TikTok video about the racist origins of the pancake brand Aunt Jemima, and amid other online critiques taking place, the brand announced that they would retire the racist imagery.  She has recently also made headlines as of late for her unique form of social activism, which was featured on NBC News, USA Today and the New York Times.

As KIRBY gravitates towards the release of her new project in the Spring ,  expect to hear much more in the coming weeks.
